What Is Affiliate Marketing?

There are plenty of ways to make money online, and one of the most popular options I’ve come across is affiliate marketing.

What is affiliate marketing?

In a nutshell, it’s when you join a company’s affiliate program, and then send customers to purchase that company’s products or services to earn a commission.

When set up correctly, affiliate marketing is a great way to generate passive income. Here’s what you need to know about affiliate marketing and how to be successful with it.

Getting Started with Affiliate Marketing

The first thing you’ll need to start affiliate marketing is a website. You can then sign up with one or more affiliate programs, get links to product or service pages for the companies you signed up with, and put those links on your website.

When a visitor to your site clicks one of those affiliate links and makes a purchase on the company’s site, the company pays you a percentage of the sale. Your affiliate links are unique to you, which is how the company knows the traffic came from your site.

It’s simple, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. The company may check out your site before approving you for its affiliate program, and you can be dropped from the program if your site doesn’t generate any sales.

What’s Needed for an Effective Affiliate Site

Even though many people think they’re going to generate tons of money through affiliate marketing, it’s rarely that easy. A successful affiliate site will need the following:

I’ve seen plenty of poor affiliate sites where the site owner simply threw a bunch of affiliate links on a site that looks like it took 10 minutes to design. These sites don’t make much, if any, money, because they’re not offering the visitor anything of value. It’s all a ploy for the site owner to make money.

Building Your Site.

Here’s how I would build an affiliate site that gets results:

  •  Choose a strong niche
  •  Fill the site with great content
  •  Insert my affiliate links naturally without overdoing it
  •  Focus on the SEO

A strong niche can make or break your site. You want something that hasn’t been done to death already by a million other affiliate sites. Of course, you also need a niche where you can find appropriate products or services to pitch.

For your content, you want to focus enough on the products that your visitors are enticed to click on the links, without making that the only point of the content.

Finally, you’ll need to make sure your site is optimized and that you get backlinks to bring in more search traffic.

The most important thing to remember is that it takes time to make money from affiliate marketing. You may not make many sales right away, but if you stick with it, your sales will start to grow more and more.
